On February 26, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forests (Masaf) hosted a high-level meeting on Xylella. The event brought together Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida and Undersecretary Patrizio La Pietra, alongside representatives from the Puglia Region and agricultural associations.
Demonstrating the Meloni Government’s strong commitment to combating Xylella, the meeting also featured Undersecretary of Health Marcello Gemmato, addressing phytosanitary concerns, and Undersecretary of Environment Claudio Barbaro, focusing on the environmental regeneration of affected areas. Additionally, CREA President Andrea Rocchi participated to oversee research coordination, while Special Commissioner Nicola Dell’Acqua contributed on water resource management strategies.
This historic meeting marked the first time that all key stakeholders—institutions, local representatives, researchers, and industry associations—gathered around the same table. The discussion reflected both operational and political perspectives on the continued spread of Xylella across Italy.
Minister Lollobrigida emphasized the importance of this collaboration:
“By bringing together the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Environment, and regional governments—particularly Puglia and Basilicata—we aim to establish a coordinated and effective response. I am confident that, through joint efforts, we can implement the necessary measures to tackle this crisis head-on.”
Undersecretary Gemmato also highlighted the significance of this new approach:
“The fight against Xylella fastidiosa takes a major step forward with better coordination among institutions, coupled with €30 million in funding allocated through the Agriculture Decree. This initiative represents a crucial shift in our response to the disease.”
